Did you know: Health and wellbeing - Depression and employment

Sharing is in our DNA at SW1CO and we want to share this piece of information as part of our health and wellbeing awareness.  We all know that wellbeing and health is not only about our physical body but also our mind.  The effect our mind (mental health) has on our general wellbeing can never be over emphasised.

We want to share in addition to our exercise classes other information which we hope will better help our understanding of wellbeing.  Getting our body to work better also stimulate the mind to work for all our wellbeing.  It is not surprising that many people affected by any sort of ill health can trace the root course to how our mind perceives problems we face.  Developing coping mechanism can help us deal with problems we encounter whether at work, home or socially.  Yet one ill health that affect us in any given circumstance is depression.  Karen Steadman, Researcher at the Work Foundation have written an article suggesting that all it is in all our interest to take issues of depression seriously as well as a more coordinated approach to it by employers, Department of Health and Department of Works and Pension.

"Underlining  the poor access to services is the lack of high level political acceptance that depression in the working age population is not just a health sector concern, but is also a labour market concern – effecting productivity and the welfare system. The Department of Health and the Department of Work of Pensions need to take a joint approach to such issues, and together take action to address the barriers to implementing evidence-based support across the UK.  This is not only about working better with each other, but with local partners, including local government, clinical commissioners, and local jobcentres, and importantly with the voluntary sector, to develop innovative ways of providing services which meet local needs."
